Enable Apple Intelligence: Devices & Help

Enable Apple Intelligence on Mac, iPhone and iPad: supported devices, requirements and fixes for a greyed-out option in the Billance converter.

Instructions for the Billance desktop app on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Apple Intelligence helps Billance recognize invoice data directly on a compatible Mac, iPhone or iPad. Your device and operating system must support the local Apple model and make it available to apps. If the option is greyed out in the converter, Billance explains whether Apple Intelligence is turned off, not ready yet or unavailable.

This guide covers setup and the key differences between Apple's system features and invoice recognition in Billance. Sources reviewed: October 1, 2026.

Quick checklist: What does Billance need?

  • An Apple Intelligence-compatible device from the list below.
  • macOS 26, iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 or later for apps to access the local model. An older system with some Apple Intelligence features is insufficient for this purpose.
  • Apple Intelligence must be usable in the operating system, with its model fully downloaded.
  • A current Billance version with Apple Intelligence support and access to the local converter.

Apple introduced model access for apps with system versions 26. Its current documentation also describes new features in versions 27; these are not the minimum requirement for Billance's local model access. Source: Apple's introduction to model access for apps.

Which devices support Apple Intelligence?

This table covers Apple's general device compatibility. Whether Billance can use the model right now also depends on system version, language, region and model readiness.

DeviceCompatible models listed by Apple
MacMacs with M1 or later; Apple's current overview also lists MacBook Neo with A18 Pro.
iPhoneiPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 models and later, and iPhone Air.
iPadiPad models with M1 or later and iPad mini with A17 Pro.

Intel Macs, iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, and older devices do not meet these requirements. Installing a newer operating system cannot add missing hardware support. Apple also lists compatible Apple Vision Pro and Apple Watch models; this does not mean the Billance converter runs on those devices. Source: Apple's device and system requirements.

How to enable Apple Intelligence on Mac

For macOS 26:

  1. Open System Settings from the Apple menu.
  2. Select Apple Intelligence & Siri.
  3. Switch Apple Intelligence on or select Turn on Apple Intelligence, if shown.
  4. Follow the setup instructions and wait for the model to become ready.
  5. Return to Billance and open the Converter in local mode. The Apple Intelligence switch should now be usable.

The label depends on your system version and previous setup. For macOS 27, Apple describes the next generation as automatically available on eligible devices, so a separate activation switch may differ from macOS 26. Use the guide for your installed version if the settings look different. Apple's macOS 26 guide.

To check your Mac's chip, open Apple menu → About This Mac. In Billance, Apple Intelligence is available only in the macOS app; Windows and Linux do not provide Apple's model.

Check language, region, storage and downloads

English and German are supported. Apple requires the device and Siri to use the same supported language. Changing a language can require the model to become ready again. Other supported languages include French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese and Korean; individual features can differ. Source: Apple's language and feature information.

Allow enough free device storage. For generation 27, Apple specifies up to 8 GB or 14 GB, depending on the device. These figures depend on the system version and are not a universal storage requirement for Billance. Check the requirements for your operating system. Source: Apple's system requirements.

You need an internet connection for setup and model provisioning. While a download is pending, keep the device on a stable Wi-Fi connection and preferably connected to power. Once the local model is ready, Billance's local invoice analysis can run without an AI upload.

Apple Intelligence features are available on eligible devices in Germany and the EU, although individual features can still have regional restrictions. Apple describes additional restrictions for devices purchased in China mainland and certain combinations of location and Apple Account region. Source: Apple's regional availability information.

Use Apple Intelligence in the Billance converter

Select local mode or on-device processing in the converter and enable Apple Intelligence. Billance reads your document and uses Apple's local model to recognize details such as invoice number, date, recipient, line items and amounts. This method does not require a prepared converter template.

Review the imported values in the invoice draft. Pay particular attention to tax information, totals and payment details: AI recognition can miss or misassign information. Apple Intelligence does not automatically produce a validated or compliant e-invoice. The converter guide explains how to review data and generate ZUGFeRD or XRechnung.

Local analysis with Apple Intelligence uses no Billance AI pages or credits. Access to the local converter still requires Billance Premium. Apple device compatibility and Billance access are separate requirements.

Apple Intelligence greyed out or unavailable: What to do

Apple Intelligence is off

The device is eligible, but the operating system is not providing the model because the setting is disabled. Enable Apple Intelligence as described above and return to Billance. Billance's own switch cannot change the system setting.

Apple Intelligence is still loading

The feature is enabled, but its model is not ready. Check the connection and free storage, then wait for provisioning to finish. A pending download does not mean your hardware is incompatible.

This device does not support Apple Intelligence

Compare the device and operating system with the compatibility list. Language or region conditions can also prevent availability. If the local model is unavailable on your system, use text recognition with a converter template or choose Billance AI, if that mode is available to you. Reinstalling Billance cannot add missing Apple hardware.

Apple Intelligence is enabled but remains greyed out in Billance

Check the device, system version 26 or later, language, region, model readiness and Billance version in that order. Then return to the converter. If the problem persists, send Billance support your device model, system version, app version and the displayed message. You do not need to send an invoice containing sensitive data for the initial diagnosis.

Recognition fails even though the feature is available

This differs from a disabled switch. Large documents or unreliable recognition can cause local analysis to fail. Select fewer pages, try again or use template-based text recognition. Review each result before applying it.

Privacy: Local processing or cloud?

When you choose Apple Intelligence in the Billance converter, text recognition and model analysis run on your device. Billance does not upload the document for Billance AI analysis in this mode. Billance AI is a separately selectable online mode.

This describes conversion. Enabled Cloud Sync and other Billance online features retain their own settings. Apple Intelligence as a whole is not exclusively offline either: Apple describes Private Cloud Compute alongside on-device processing for other features. Source: Apple Intelligence and privacy.

Frequently asked questions about Apple Intelligence

Can I enable Apple Intelligence on an Intel Mac?

Intel Macs are not listed as compatible devices by Apple. Use one of Billance's other available conversion methods.

Is working Siri enough?

No. The voice assistant, individual Apple Intelligence system features and local model availability for Billance are different requirements. Check the status in the converter.

Do I need to set up ChatGPT?

Billance's local invoice recognition does not require the ChatGPT extension or a ChatGPT account. It uses Apple's local model.

Why is there no activation switch on my compatible device?

Check the guide for your installed system version. Apple describes version 27 differently from version 26. A missing switch alone therefore proves neither availability nor lack of support.

Can I turn off Apple Intelligence only in Billance?

Yes. Turn it off in the local converter if you want to use a converter template instead. This does not change the operating system's Apple Intelligence setting.

Is Apple Intelligence the same as Billance AI?

No. In this conversion method, Apple Intelligence uses Apple's local model. Billance AI is the separate online mode. Selection, requirements and billing differ.
