Backup & Restore

Secure and restore your Billance data: manual and automatic backups, encryption and transferable .billance files.

Instructions for the Billance desktop app on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Billance stores your working data locally on your device. A .billance file lets you preserve the current state and restore it later.

What a backup contains

A manual backup contains the local Billance database with company profiles, recipients, internal contacts, products, documents, and templates. Generated PDF/XML files and local app settings can be included optionally.

Security

  • By default, the backup is encrypted and bound to your Billance account
  • A transferable backup is not bound to an account and is therefore intentionally less restrictive
  • Transferable backups are a Premium feature
  • Log files are not imported from a backup

Automatic backups

Automatic backups are a Premium feature. You can configure a daily, weekly, or hourly schedule, retention count, maximum age, and file name pattern. A missed run is caught up on the next suitable app start or when the app returns to the foreground. After a Premium downgrade, the configuration remains saved but automatic runs are paused.

Desktop app

Create a backup in the desktop app

  1. Open Settings → Backup & Restore
  2. Select Create backup
  3. Choose the content and security mode
  4. Select where to save the .billance file

For automatic backups, the desktop app also lets you choose a destination folder. A second drive or a reliably synchronized folder provides better protection against failure of the main device.

Restore a backup

  1. Open Backup & Restore
  2. Select Restore backup, then choose a .billance file
  3. Review the account, security mode, included data, and preview
  4. Choose optional documents and app settings
  5. Confirm the restore

Important: Restoring replaces the local database with the selected backup state. Billance may then request an app restart or reload. Create a current backup before major changes and occasionally verify that your backup files can be opened.
